In memoriam:Tose Proeski (1981-2007)

Tose Proeski was the biggest music star from Macedonia. In his career he achieved many goals and was given many important awards, not only in Macedonia but outside it as well. He was very popular and successful singer among Balkan countries. Beside being a great singer he was also a great person, who gave a lot of contribution in humanitarian areas.

  • In 2003 he was awarded Mother Theresa humanitarian award
  • In 2003 he became a Regional UNICEF Ambassador
  • in 2004 he became a national UNICEF Ambasador

Tose Proeski died in a car accident in Croatia on 16 October 2007 at an age of 26. His death is a big loss for Macedonia however he continues to live in the hearts of his fans and all people of Macedonia.

Tose Proeski represented Macedonia in Eurovision Song Contest 2004 with the song Life, which are mostly the words of Mother Theresa. Tose decided to put her words in his song after he met with her.

Eurovision or Europolitics?!

eurovisionEurovision is an exciting Song Contest but when it comes to voting, geographical and cultural neighbours tend to vote for each other. Through many years no one votes for Britain, no matter how the song is. The Scandinavians all voted for one another and Warsaw Pact countries did the same. Furthermore, the countries of former Yugoslavia always give 12 points to each other and never give any good point to Western Europe.

Albania always gets 12 points from Macedonia since Albanians are one of the biggest nation in Macedonia. However, Slavo-Macedonians are never happy about this fact, they would prefer to give 12 points to Serbia but this can happen only if Albania is not in the list. Albania never gets any vote from the countries where albanians doesn’t live, only Albanians from other countries vote for Albania. Of course this will happen since Albania has no political power. Moreover,Germany always gives high points to Turkey, including also 12 points. This happens becuase a large number of Turks live in Germany.

In the last years,Britain,France,Germany and Spain-which pay for the Contest couldn’t make it to the top 16. Balkan countries always support each other in the Contest and leave Western countries out. It is strange that Bosnia never gave any high point to the western countries that tried to help during difficult times however Bosnia gives good points to the country that did the ethnical cleansing, to Serbia. Maybe they want to show that they already forggot it and bulit “bratstvo jedinstvo” (brotherhood). Another reason that Serbia gets good points from Bosnia may be becuase of the serbs who live there.

This year, politics was the main company of the Contest, as ussual. All Russia’s neighbours and former Soviet countries sticked together and gave high marks to “Believe” by Dima Bilan. Western European Nations shut out after Russia won the Eurovision 2008.However this was a victory for the Eastern countries.

The song of Bulgary didn’t even enter in the Final even if before it was chosen The Most Modern Song of this Contest. It seems that Bulgary doesn’t have strong political bonds. Moreover,Sweden, which was expected to win the Eurovision and was chosen the top in a Europe-wide BBC voting, was ranked number 18 in the Final. This was really surprising because the Swedish song was great and many people liked it. This year Albania send in Eurovision a perfect song,a great voice, a great melody. In my opinion, the Albanian song is better than the Russian song in many views, however it was ranked number 17 in the Final. For instance, the voice of the Albanian singer,Olta Boka,is much more bettert than the voice of Dima Bilan. If you dont agree with me go on the links in the right side of my blog, there you can find the Eurovision songs. In my opinion the Turkish song deserves more,it really was one of the best songs in the Contest however it was ranked very low. I think the music and the voice of the singer were perfect. Even if the text was in Turkish, the song sounds nice and brilliant.

In my opinon, the voting part of the Eurovision is more exciting than the part when songs are presented. Everyone is so excited about the voting because in that time nations can understand which other nation likes them, and countries can understand who is their political supporter.

Eurovision Song Contest 2008 and “Obraz”

The honour of hosting the Eurovision Song Contest has fallen to Serbia this year, and fascist groups in the country are already promising violence against people attending the festivities. Gay men are a particular target, according to the president of the fascist organisation Obraz, who announced his violent intentions in the pages of daily newspaper ALO! earlier this week. The newspaper ran a story on April 7th, calling Eurovision “gay youth day.” Their threats have led some to question whether Belgrade is a suitable location for a contest that is both a gay favourite and a powerful symbol of European unity. Several Serbian media outlets have reported that “thousands” of gay and lesbian people are coming to Belgrade for the contest. The reaction of the Serbian authorities in charge of the event to the fascist threats has alarmed lesbian and gay activists in the country. “We are not organising their arrival, therefore we can not take care of their security,” Aleksandar Rados, the Eurovision organiser’s PR, said of gay visitors.

People from the UK, US and other countries that supported Kosovo’s declaration of indepdence from Serbia earlier this year are already at risk. The US embassy in Belgrade remains evacuated after rioting Serbs attacked the building and tried to set it alight. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s advice to British travellers to the country states: “The overall security situation in Serbia remains calm, but you are advised to exercise extreme caution when travelling around. You should keep a low profile and stay alert at all times and take particular care to avoid public gatherings, political rallies, protests and polling stations, and pay close attention to local media reports at the present time.”
